Professor John Fisher Head of Department

Mrs Cath Goulborn Secretary

Description

Professor Fisher's Unit deals with issues of wear and osteolysis due to

orthopaedic implants. It is now recognised that particulate wear debris

and the resulting adverse biological reactions that lead to osteolysis is

one of the major long term causes of failure in orthopaedic implants. The

group comprises over 20 postgraduate and postdoctoral research fellows

and has an external funding stream of over 3 m ECU.

Skills

The Medical and Biological Engineering Research Group at the

University of Leeds comprises a team of engineers, biologists and

surgeons who have developed advanced in vitro models to study complex

mechanobiologic interactive processes.

Products

The group has over 50 stations of different types of mechanical tests and

wear simulation systems including total hip and knee simulators. The

group has developed models to investigate quantitatively wear particulate

generation at the nanometer level, and the novel in vitro cell culture

models to study interaction between cells and particulates and to predict

osteolytic potential.

Collaboration

The group collaborates extensively with clinicians and industry with 15

companies actively involved in projects.
