Project summary: To develop and test new materials for use as
composite scaffolds for dermo-epidermal skin grafts in the treatment of severe burns and
chronic ulcers. A more widespread culture on the clinical use of skin grafts will also be
established. The project will combine and develop the expertise and techniques of the
partners in the areas of synthesis of biocompatible polymers, device engineering, design
and testing of constructs and research and clinical practice in the tissue engineering
field.
Project achievements: Candidate scaffold materials have been selected
from a large starting array of hyaluronic acid derivatives and have been processed into
suitable matrix formations. In vitro biological testing has been carried out and is
playing an important role in identifying candidate materials. In vivo testing is planned.
